Background:

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of everyday usable objects or “things” such as wearable devices, smart fridges, door locks, connected cars, traffic signals etc, enabling them to exchange data with other connected devices for a specific purpose. IoT driven by Smart Phones will enable us to do our day-to-day tasks more conveniently and make our life easier. IoT, coupled with Cloud Computing and Data analytics, will improve the productivity of industry and business and enable better decisions.

The number of Smart devices, embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity, has been increasing at an exponential rate in the last 5 years and it is expected that by 2020, there will be over 50 billion devices connected to the Internet. IoT can have diverse applications, including retail, transportation, healthcare, automotive, manufacturing etc.

As per Industry analysts, IoT is expected to present a potential business opportunity of about $1.7 trillion in the next 5 years.  However, in order to harness this opportunity, industry has to transform business operations and introduce new business and revenue models by providing innovative products and services. In order to maximize the social and economic benefit of the technology, issues of interoperability, need for developing open platforms and standardization across technology layers have to be addressed. There is also an imperative to address the security risks, due to enhanced vulnerability.

IoT is an inter disciplinary area, which needs integration of electronics, telecom and software technologies. Successful development and deployment of IoT products and services needs working together of technologists, researchers, business analysts and managers.

Top IoT companies in the world include Intel, Microsoft, Cisco, Google, and IBM. IoT is already making inroads into India, with products and services being launched by start-up companies to reputed companies like Philips.  Large IT services companies like TCS, Cognizant, Infosys and WIPRO are setting up centers of competence on IoT, as part of Digital Business Transformation. A large number of start-ups are venturing into IOT.  Besides business opportunities, IOT also presents excellent career opportunities.
