IoT will radically transform our life style and dramatically improve productivity in office. Considering the immense career opportunities that the inter-disciplinary technology offers, it is essential for the students as well as working professionals to be abreast of developments in the field”, added Prof Rao.

Mr S V Srirama Rao, Associate Editor of IUP said “ICFAI University Press has been endeavoring to bring developments in the futuristic technologies to the forefront of the discerning readers and this is just one more instance of that tradition. While the world has celebrated IoT day on April 8, it is significant that IUP launched the first Indian magazine on IoT at the same time”, added Mr Srirama Rao.

DSC_5985-1Mr Sudhakar Rao, Director, Branding, ICFAI Group in his presiding address said “ICFAI Group plans to popularize IoT and make its students “future-ready”   by way of conducting TechFests and student competitions on innovative products around IoT, thereby igniting the minds of students.

The event was attended by large gathering of students, faculty of ICFAI, academicians, and businessmen.

Background:

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of everyday usable objects or “things” such as wearable devices, smart fridges, door locks, connected cars, traffic signals etc, enabling them to exchange data with other connected devices for a specific purpose. IoT driven by Smart Phones will enable us to do our day-to-day tasks more conveniently and make our life easier. IoT, coupled with Cloud Computing and Data analytics, will improve the productivity of industry and business and enable better decisions.

The number of Smart devices, embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity, has been increasing at an exponential rate in the last 5 years and it is expected that by 2020, there will be over 50 billion devices connected to the Internet. IoT can have diverse applications, including retail, transportation, healthcare, automotive, manufacturing etc.

As per Industry analysts, IoT is expected to present a potential business opportunity of about $1.7 trillion in the next 5 years.  However, in order to harness this opportunity, industry has to transform business operations and introduce new business and revenue models by providing innovative products and services. In order to maximize the social and economic benefit of the technology, issues of interoperability, need for developing open platforms and standardization across technology layers have to be addressed. There is also an imperative to address the security risks, due to enhanced vulnerability.

IoT is an inter disciplinary area, which needs integration of electronics, telecom and software technologies. Successful development and deployment of IoT products and services needs working together of technologists, researchers, business analysts and managers.

Top IoT companies in the world include Intel, Microsoft, Cisco, Google, and IBM. IoT is already making inroads into India, with products and services being launched by start-up companies to reputed companies like Philips.  Large IT services companies like TCS, Cognizant, Infosys and WIPRO are setting up centers of competence on IoT, as part of Digital Business Transformation. A large number of start-ups are venturing into IOT.  Besides business opportunities, IOT also presents excellent career opportunities.

“I am delighted to learn that The Case Centre has conferred the Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method Award to Debapratim Purkayastha, Associate Dean of ICFAI Business School (IBS). As this is the first time that an Indian academic is chosen for this prestigious award of The Case Centre, it is indeed a proud moment not only for the recipient but also for the entire academic community of India. This is a richly deserved award for Purkayastha, considering the pioneering work done by him in the area of case development and teaching as well as the number of best-selling cases produced by him. The quality, diversity and innovativeness of his cases are testified by the number of previous awards received by him in various events held in different countries such as Belgium, USA, UK, Portugal, Switzerland and Canada. The ICFAI Business School deserves to be specially commended on their unswerving focus on the case method, which has helped in the development of outstanding case-writers like Purkayastha in their system, making them the contributor of largest number of Indian cases to The Case Centre. Congratulations and best wishes to Purkayastha and to IBS! Let a thousand (nay, million) flowers bloom in the ICFAI system!”

“Well-deserved award winner DebapratimPurkayastha brings passion to the depth and breadth of his experiences as a teacher, a case researcher, and an innovator in case development.  He is dedicated to continuing learning through all of these processes to bring his expanded knowledge of business functioning and skills in the teaching and research crafts.  He is a conduit of that knowledge and those skills to the ICFAI Business School students who will be leaders in tomorrow’s business community. Purkayastha has sought out innovative case research genre (e.g., “comic book” cases) and, in so doing, makes an important contribution to the future of case research and teaching. As a member of the Board for The Case Centre in the USA, I am very aware of our organization’s dedication to the case domain to which Purkayastha makes such strong contributions.”

“DebapratimPurkayastha with his immense experience in case writing was invited to TAPMI for conducting a case writing workshop. All our faculty immensely benefited from the same. What struck me most was that Purkayastha was humble even though he had achieved a lot in winning several international accolades. His advice about each aspect of case writing starting from how to frame a title keeping the international audience in mind was very useful. I am sure that Purkayastha (already a case writing Master in India)  will become a global case writing celebrity in the near future. My best wishes for further successes and a great career ahead for him.”

“DebapratimPurkayastha’s cases are exemplary; in fact I used five of them in my textbook “International Management 8ed” with Pearson, and they have been well received. His cases are noteworthy because of the range of coverage of contemporary issues and locales important to international business. In addition, the depth of research and coverage about the companies and their challenges present students with realistic decision-oriented situations. The inclusion of thorough teaching notes further contributes to an excellent package for professors and feedback for the students. I would also add my appreciation of Purkayastha’s willingness to adapt and update selected cases for inclusion in my book, and I have already selected some for my 9ed, projected publication date January 2016.”
